Traditional Acupuncture

Traditional acupuncture involves the insertion of a needle into locations across the surface of the body that have been empirically defined over thousands of years. The fundamental theory underlying this practice is the concept that acupoints across the body are interconnected with physiological functionality and can be altered through stimulation of specific acupoints.

Neurological Acupuncture

Scalp acupuncture is when I gently insert very fine needles between your skin and skull at specific points that relate to brain function. Some early studies suggest that this can help improve blood flow and oxygen to the brain, which may help repair and stimulate the healing of injured brain cells. This process can be seen as the brain "rewiring" itself at a local level.

I offer both scalp and body acupuncture to help with the following neurological conditions:

  • Stroke and brain injury
  • Cerebral Palsy and like conditions
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Autism
  • Developmental delay

Combining neurological acupuncture with your rehabilitation program may potentially help improve your progress and overall well-being across different areas of health.

Cosmetic Acupuncture

Cosmetic acupuncture is designed as a safe, gentle anti-ageing technique used to improve facial elasticity and tone, soften the appearance of fine lines, increase circulation to brighten the complexion and give you a glow. Of course, cosmetic acupuncture is an extension of traditional acupuncture, which means other health issues (which may show on your face) may also be addressed, treating your body as a whole.

What can you expect in your treatment?

Your treatment begins with Gua Sha massage over the face, this is a gentle scraping technique using a ceramic tool to stimulate blood flow and circulation to the acupuncture points. Next, very fine needles that are made especially for the face are inserted using a variety of techniques to help stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. Finally, we finish with a gentle facial massage, and a cool jade roller to aid circulation and detoxification and leave you feeling even more relaxed.

Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM)

FSM maybe used on its own or combined with cosmetic acupuncture to further enhance treatment result. With FSM, a warm, wet towel will be placed over your neck and face in “barber shop” style and attached to leads that will release frequencies for skin rejuvenation and anti-ageing.

How many treatments are needed?

The number of treatments needed varies depending on age, lifestyle and genetic inheritance. Between one and three treatments, you may observe an increased glow in your complexion as a result of the increased blood flow to the face and you should feel more rested and relaxed. Usually between the fifth and seventh treatment, you will notice a difference in your wrinkles and skin tone. For optimal results, treatment is three times per week for two weeks, then twice weekly for two weeks. It is advisable that, by the end of the initial block of treatments, you come in for a maintenance treatment between four and eight weeks, depending on age and lifestyle.

Laser Acupuncture

Laser Acupuncture is a non-invasive alternative to traditional acupuncture treatment. One minute of laser acupuncture can have the same therapeutic effect as 25 minutes of acupuncture. Kathren will often combine laser acupuncture with traditional acupuncture when treating musculoskeletal pain conditions to enhance a positive treatment outcome. For those that are needle phobic, laser acupuncture can be used as an alternative treatment option. Most patients report feeling an immediate pain relieving effects and some report a shift in energy.

Cupping

Cupping therapy is an ancient healing method often used to reduce pain and improve the immune response. A suction force inside the cup pulls your skin upwards drawing fluid into the treated area and promoting blood flow and healing at a cellular level. After cupping, it is normal to experience bruising for a few days, sometimes longer. But its benefits can include reduced pain and inflammation, decreased muscle tension, improved blood flow and a feeling of relaxation.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is traditional acupuncture and how does it work?

Traditional acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body, known as acupuncture points. This is believed to stimulate the body's energy flow (or "Qi") and promote natural healing by enhancing recuperative power, immunity and physical and emotional health.

  • What conditions can acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture can be used to treat a variety of conditions, including chronic pain, arthritis, anxiety, insomnia, digestive problems, menstrual issues and migraines.

  • How does laser acupuncture differ from traditional needle acupuncture?

Laser acupuncture uses low-level laser lights instead of needles to stimulate acupuncture points. This non-invasive method is often used for patients who are needle phobic or for conditions where minimal stimulation is required.

  • What is Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) and what does it treat?

FSM is a treatment method that uses micro-amperage current and the application of specific frequencies to treat pain and inflammation in body tissues. It's used for a variety of conditions, including fibromyalgia, myofascial pain and acute and chronic inflammation.
